Well this lot are full of surprises these days, aren't they? The reformation wasn't totally out of the blue, but the sudden arrival of new material last year certainly was. They also shocked us a bit by announcing that Kim Deal had left, throwing this much wished-for reunion into doubt. Pixies had other ideas though, and quickly signed up Kim Shattuck of The Muffs as a fitting replacement for live dates, only to then kick her out of the band, allegedly for stage-diving, something the band don't seem to approve of. Thinking about it, the thought of Frank Black leaping down on you and some unsuspecting punters isn't perhaps the greatest image to have. Now with the experienced Paz Lenchantin drafted in, they're back to a four-piece again.
So 2013 was a hectic year for the underground legends, and the surprises keep on coming. Today the band have, once again out of the blue, announced the release of a brand new four-track EP, no advertising before-hand, no promo campaigns. When you're a band like this, word-of-mouth does that job for you. For our first taster as to the sound of the latest batch of tunes they've posted a video for 'Blue Eyed Hexe', a song that packs more of a punch than 'Bagboy' did. This is Pixies going back to their heavier roots, and possibly the side of the band that is less celebrated by the mainstream than those lauded singles we all know. Yet still, amongst the dirty guitars and the throat-shredding vocals a shiny melody can just be seen peeping out, and that's always been the allure of this band. Not only do they make an ungodly racket, but they do so without scrimping on the tune front. Does this further increase in new songs indicate that we'll get an album this year? As things currently stand, I wouldn't be surprised either way.
