Lanterns On The Lake - The Buffalo Days

Single review by soul1@thesoundofconfusion.com

As a general rule of thumb you can expect a band who are signed to Bella Union to be pretty darn good. Newcastle group Lanterns On The Lake teamed up with that imprint last year to begin work on new album 'Until The Colours Run' which will see the light of day worldwide this week. Popular with the whole team here, the album's first single and title-track received a good write-up a few months back, and 'Picture Show' made our Scottish correspondent's tracks of the year list. So they're doing something right. Here in the UK we've been able to get our mitts on the album for a few months now, but as from Tuesday folks in the US can also check out what treats they have in store without having to go through the expense or hassle of buying an import.

The band naturally have a sound that's influenced by US alt-rock and Americana, so that connection could serve them well. The album's second single is called 'The Buffalo Days', and we don't have many buffalo here in Britain, so the US connection is pretty clear. It's a stirring alternative rock song too, and one that very much fits in with the American scene without any pretence or parody. There's a brooding intro that seems as though it's hiding a great force behind those restrained guitars and strong voice, and after a while they let go and this is unleashed. We're not talking loud or rocky dynamics for the sake of it; the steady build and soaring guitar solo are added with precision and then made to stop in their tracks before they get too carried away. Then it builds again, and this time it leads to the finale of the track. Lanterns On The Lake should (and may well soon be) a lot bigger than they are now.
