The Jim Jones Revue - Collision Boogie

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

When The Jim Jones Revue burst onto the scene a few years ago it was through making a hybrid of blues, garage and rock n' roll that was more frantic and intense than most people ever get close to. A friend of mine called them "Little Richard on speed", and while the old "like (x-band) on (y-drug)" isn't a new way of describing bands, it perfectly encapsulated the sound of the group. They hadn't come from nowhere though, these were experienced players who've achieved varying levels of success in previous outfits. Since then their music has remained pretty much the same. And it's always a riot.

New single 'Collision Boogie' is tackling the same styles and influences from a different angle and with a different feel. For starters, that word "boogie" isn't there for show. The piano that leads this song has an element of boogie-woogie to it. This is stripped right back too. That gravelly voice commands the room, and musically they do away with the guitars totally. This catchy, groovy, shuffling number is just piano and plenty of rattlesnake percussion. Stomping sounds are layered through as well, so rhythmically this is a well arranged piece and manages to have as much power at half the pace and with half the instruments. It's brilliant to hear this terrific band trying something a bit different with such gratifying results.
