Nervous Nellie - Shoulder

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

In what is a shamefully bad link, I'll say it's somewhat fitting that the cover of 'Shoulder' has a car on the cover, as the song is a bit of a journey. We already know that Swedish-based Nervous Nellie have had a bit of a journey themselves, as one half of the band (they're two sets of brothers) grew up in Chicago before learning their family was moving to the other side of the Atlantic. Given today's news they probably have even more reason to count that as a blessing. They're a varied bunch who have blurred the boundaries between alt-pop and indie-rock, especially on tracks like 'Gloves' and 'Eaten By Bears'. This new single is a little different.

The EP containing the aforementioned songs was from the beginning of the year, but 'Shoulder' is the first track from their forthcoming new album. What's more, to coincide with this single release, the quartet headed back across the ocean for some US dates (ending on September 29th, nicely timed), so it's been an eventful month. The song is less poppy than some we've heard, and less commercial; this shows off their indie-rock side more. Beginning as a mid-paced, almost plodding number, it's a classic alt-rock sound which they gradually add more harmonies to. Then drums begin to boom distantly, more voices sing the lyrics over the top of each other and the pace increases. Suddenly this simple song is more complex and more impressive with it. What at first didn't seem like ideal single material turns out to be very good indeed. Bring on the album.
