King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard - Float Along - Fill Your Lungs

Album review by karla@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

On their Facebook page, seven-strong Australian psych collective King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard describe themselves as “completely fried theremin wielding psychopaths", and personally, we are at a loss to better this apt description. Their latest offering, 'Float Along - Fill Your Lungs', is the band's third full-length album which features eight noise-infested, hallucinogenic tracks for our consumption. The album blasts into life with 'Head On/Pill', a mind-bending, discordant, psychedelic swirl of reverberated sound that lasts for 16 minutes, and I must urge you not to make the rookie mistake of listening to it first thing in the morning, when you have just woken up.

'I'm Not A Man Unless I Have A Woman' follows with a tranquil, surf-rock, dreamy sound and almost soulful vocals that allows you to wind down and pull yourself together from the previous, erm, experience. 'God Is Calling Me Back Home' is an enjoyable track that falls firmly into the '60s pop/rock genre but the band still go out with a whirlwind of reverb. Then there are tracks like the spectacular hybrid of a single, '30 Past 7'; personal favourite 'Let Me Mend The Past' that's more of a poppy track, again with the cries of a '60s influence, guitar strums that sound like summer, and a really joyful piano tinkering. The vocals on this track are top-notch too. 'Mystery Jack' has a slightly Western feel to it, and 'Pop In My Step' has a chuggy, bluesy intro that is a super smooth listen.

The album then fades out respectively with 'Float Along - Fill Your Lungs', a pleasantly hypnotic, relaxed whirl of psychedelia. It can sometimes be a bit hit and miss when bands reconstruct a predominately '60s psych sound, you have to know what you're doing and where you're going with it, and fortunately these guys do. 'Float Along - Fill Your Lungs' is an out-of-this-world, trippy, time-warp collection of songs that, depending on your musical preferences, you will either love or hate, and I guess that's part of the fun of making music with the refusal to quash, censor or confirm to popular ideals. Good effort all round.
