Deer Lake - Nightmares In Blue

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

Scottish band Deer Lake impressed with their debut single 'Like Ghosts' recently, but with follow-up 'Nightmares In Blue' they've gone one better. With an intro that fails to set your expectations on fire, the beginning of this song is perhaps a little misleading. Those first few bars are not unlike dozens of other bands we hear daily, but after a few seconds you get the sense that there might be something bigger and better just around the corner. As the drums hit and the guitars begin to build this certainly becomes the case.

Throwing in the kind of life-affirming chorus that many aim for but few achieve, they show what great songwriters they are. This is a rousing track that doesn't stop getting better and better as it goes on, almost as though the band are challenging themselves to make each bar better than the one before. This is a solid gold indie-rock track, and our interest is piqued enough to wonder just how good these guys can really become.
