The Nectars - Angelie

Single review by jay@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

Everyday there seems to be another damn fine band coming out from Oz. It is such a fertile scene, gone are the days when every review was filled with either comparisons to AC/DC or INXS. And these acts storming out from down-under all seem to have one thing in common: bloody good music. They don't sound like each other, but it all sounds sweet to me. So to The Nectars; 'Angelie' is their debut single and it covers all the right musical touchstones, delivered in a fury of raw throated passion. Flashes of early Libs, The Undertones, Ramones and Stooges all wrapped up in a song sung to a girl with that timeless youthful wanton. 'Angelie' swings round on a potent chorus that sinks i's claws into you. A dirty, Stooges bass drags you into the song and then The Nectars deliver, and within the first play you are hitting repeat.

It may all sound deceptively simple, but it hits you hard and doesn't let up. Then that chorus wows you again like melodic punk blast riding a New York Dolls train. It breaks to an urgent tale of wanting our heroine, then hooks you in again. It sounds like it's produced in not much more than a dilapidated room, but who cares when the song is this good. A shout-out has to go to the B-side 'Do You Want Me To Posses You'. A sheer, feral, youthful blast that Pete Doherty wishes he'd ever been capable of writing.
