RoBoTaLiEn - You're The Problem That Will Not Go Away

Album review by Marcus Leyton

Writing his own brand of alternative pop, aimed at those who want something a little different from the norm, RoBoT aLiEn is the alter ego of singer-songwriter Rob Allen. Ranging from simple acoustica to distorted electronica, and with various shades in between, this album isn't one that they'll likely be taking a lot of mainstream radio play from.

Having said that, he has made a fan of 6 Music's Tom Robinson, and there are two principle reasons for that. Firstly, his range and versatility. Allen is as comfortable putting together a melancholy, acoustic track such as 'Don’t Worry, Be Angry' - short and simple, airy, lovely harmonies - as he is filling our ears with the slow build, electronic likes of 'Little Rhymes' (a cover of the Mercury Rev song).

This kind of contrast across an album isn't common, and perhaps will settle if RoBoT aLiEn continues on to develop a more honed "sound". For now though, there's a lot to be said for playing so comfortably in so many different environments. There's something here for fans of pop, rock, indie, electronica and various other influences, so it's worth checking out if you like a wide range of genres.
