Five For Free #189

Hop Along - Sister Cities

As you're probably aware, we've been big fans of Weathervane Music's 'Shaking Through' series, and this month they're offering up one of the best tracks so far. Philadelphia's Hop Along have come up with a storming alt-rock tune in 'Sister Cities' and have a stellar vocalist in Frances Quinlan. They've been around since 2008 but this is our introduction. We'll be keeping an eye out for more.

A.A. Wallace - Temporal Suspension

Canadian musician A.A. Wallace was formerly a member of garage band Sleepless Nights, but when they split in 2011 he embarked upon a different direction for his solo career, taking on more experimental, electronic alt-pop sounds. He released his debut solo album '(disambiguation)' last month and is giving us the excellent 'Temporal Suspension' as a showcase of his new venture.

No Coda - Holy War

Hailing from the Swedish town of Sandviken in Sweden, the same place that brought us Simian Ghost, No Coda have recently signed to Nomethod and by way of an introduction they're offering us a free download of the track 'Holy War', a sprawling, slightly psychedelic piece of alt-rock which sounds quite mighty and definitely bodes well for the future. Another band to keep you eye on.

Outsides - Seesaw

Taking indie/pop music and giving it an electronic makeover, not a million miles away from A.A. Wallace, are Outsides, essentially the solo project of Kansas City resident Tim Ellis. 'Seesaw' is the first track by his new project and it's a little beauty. Intricately layered, melodic, genre-crossing alt-pop of the highest order. Here's hoping it's no one-off.

Jenny Gabrielsson Mare - The Black Lodge

With a ghostly whisper, this spooky number from Swedish artist Jenny Gabrielsson Mare gets underway, plotting a musical course that takes us from lounge music, to dreampop to classic orchestral pop music, almost like a more sinister and sedate version of Anna Calvi. 'The Black Lodge' is peppered with these whispers and creates quite an atmosphere.
