Hanni El Khatib - Penny

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

Hanni El Khatib may have a colourful life history, being part Palestinian and part Filipino, but he grew up in California and as we learned from previous single 'Family' the man developed a passion for the garage-rock sounds that have, over the years, become so synonymous with that part of the world. And if you're currently in the US making any form of garage-type music then you're probably going to pick Dan Auerbach (Black Keys) amongst your list of dream producers. Hanni El Khatib struck gold in that respect, and his album 'Head In The Dirt' is out this week.

Having such a big name involved on your record can sometimes detract from your own efforts, but not here. In fact this could work doubly well. Not only do we have a well produced record, but that sizable Black Keys fanbase may even have peek over to see what the fuss is all about. And when they find songs like current single 'Penny' with its pop charm and catchy nature they might just treat themselves to to the whole record. This track shows that, regardless of style, Khatib can pen a decent tune. Trust us, it's worth your while getting to the the latest Black Keys gigs a bit early, you might find something you like.
