As you may be aware, cult singer-songwriter Daniel Johnston released his first ever comic book last year, 'Space Ducks - An Infinite Comic Book of Musical Greatness'. It's not common that a comic book is accompanied by a soundtrack, but then not everyone has the same view of the world as Daniel Johnston; it's all part of why the man is so revered. The 'Space Ducks Soundtrack' is released on Monday and will be Johnston's first since 2009. It includes seven unreleased tracks by Daniel, as well as contributions from Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Eleanor Friedberger, Deer Tick and more.
It's an unorthodox project to say the least, but here's the theme song, along with accompanying video. Johnston's music and lyrics are often playful, sometimes even childlike, something which suits his voice and also his complex personality. This track is exactly what you'd expect from an idea as outlandish as space ducks fighting for the freedom of children against the evil of the USA. There's a plodding beat and piano line, lyrics that tell of certain aspects of the story, as well as plenty of sci-fi sound effects included. It's safe to say you probably won't hear many other songs like this in 2013.
