Ruarri Joseph - Until The Luck Runs Dry

Single review by kev@thesoundofconfusion.co.uk

OK we were a bit baffled watching the beginning of this video which showed a man walking along a clifftop carrying some garden rakes, but without giving anything away, it all becomes apparent in spectacular fashion, that man being artist Tony Plant. 'Until The Luck Runs Dry' is a wistful and reflective song, something else that makes perfect sense when you learn that it was written following the death of a friend. Ruarri Joseph isn't an artist we know well and this track could be deemed a little middle-of-the-road, in fact that was our initial impression.

Hear it out though, give it a few plays, let it sink in, and then you'll find it's a piece of subtle beauty that builds from a simple beginning to a grand and sweeping climax of strings, rolling drums and guitars. It becomes a quite stirring track that considers life and how we live it, maybe even contemplating how we should live our lives and how few of us actually fulfill the potential given to us. This is no existential crisis though, more the pondering of life and its fragility, all to a song whose fragility is exactly what makes it work so well.

  1. The singer/songwriter scene is a crowded one and it's hard to grab close attention, but as this excellent review points out, listen carefully and you will be rewarded with subtle music and lyrics and a divine, distinctive voice the like of which only comes along every few years. As a very frequent gig-goer, Ruarri Joseph is my bet to achieve the well earned commercial success he deserves to match his talent this year
