Five For Free #145

Hopewell - The King & The Canary

Brooklyn's Hopewell have been making music for over a decade now and are one of those bands that have stealthily managed to slip under our radar until recently. The excellent psychedelic alt-rock of 'The King & The Canary' is from their latest EP 'Another Music' which also features them joining forces with Ride's Mark Gardener to cover Brian Eno's 'Needle In The Camel's Eye'.

Evil Eyes - Keep Your Mind On Me

Sticking with US alt-rock of another kind and another coast are Californians Evil Eyes who have a love of twanging guitars, hazy vocals and the odd bit of innovating with different sounds. Their rather good track 'Keep Your Mind On Me' was released recently as a double A-side with the song 'Half A Heart'. We can expect a debut album sometime in the first half of the year.

Featureless Ghost - Flash

Atlanta, Georgia's Featureless Ghost have been creating a variety of different electro-pop sounds for nearly three years, touching on several styles. 'Flash' is taken from their new album 'Personality Matrix' which follows several EP releases. On this song we find them digging around in a box of 1980s electro-goth records and coming out with a dark, stark work of their own.

Farewell Republic - Lines

In what is an unintentional USA special edition of 'Five For Free' we'll now head back to the east-coast and this final track from the second album by Farewell Republic. To be honest we don't know a great deal about them, but the stuttering indie of 'Lines' is a good tune and you can find it on 'Young Effete Titans Of Industry' which is due out very soon.

Jessica Pratt - Night Faces

Jessica Pratt is a San Franciscan singer-songwriter whose music harks back to the days when you had to be sure to wear some flowers in your hair if you were visiting the city. 'Night Faces' is a classic sounding folky track that's not without a certain dreamy magic of a bygone era. It kicks off her new self-titled album which is available now.
