Mocky - Little Bird

Being experimental needn't mean coming up with some new offshoot of dubstep or gluing together some unlistenable electronic squelches and crunches. Dominic Salome, AKA Mocky, will be releasing new EP 'Graveyard Novelas' in February and has unveiled the first track from it, part recorded in Berlin and part in LA (it's alright for some). To create this individual sounding piece he used some conventional parts, such as a 30 piece orchestra, and also played around with regular instruments recorded in a different way; for example, 'Little Bird' contains a vibraphone put through autotune.

Instead of resulting in something overly avant-garde that's designed to be admired rather than listened to, Mocky has actually created a skewed pop track that's difficult to categorise and similarly tricky to describe. We'll call it soul, but it's a very modern form that feels a bit like a jigsaw puzzle falling into place. The pieces fit naturally instead of needing to be awkwardly squashed together. From the twinkling opening to the tribal beat and French (I think) backing vocals. It's nice to know that there are experimentalists out there to whom making a decent sounding song matters as much as any flashy new techniques.
