Oh Minnows - Hurry

Single review by KevW

It was something of a shame that former Semifinalists man Chris Steele-Nicholson's Oh Minnows project bypassed large sections of the music press. Early track 'Might' was a magnificent piece of electronic dreampop that alone deserved to be given some kind of special award for simply being stunningly great, then debut album 'For Shadows' achieved only modest success when more could have been hoped for. Luckily the story doesn't stop there, and following last year's digital release, the album is now getting the physical format treatment and will be available via Young & Lost Club on November 5th, accompanied by a previously unreleased single recorded in London whilst in the UK for promotional duties last year.

There's been a fair amount of interest in acts who inhabit the space between dreamy soundcapes and conventional pop, with M83's stock in particular seeing a surprising and rapid rise. Whether Oh Minnows can in any way replicate that is unlikely as the M83 love seems a curious one-off, yet with songs like 'Hurry' he's treading similar ground and to a standard at least as high. This is fluid synth-pop with an alternative slant and a hazy finish. It takes 80s sounds and makes them glisten and shimmer by blending them with dreampop, but it's uptempo enough not to put off people who find the genre a little low on the tune side of things. 'Hurry' is a great pop record as well, and really Oh Minnows should be championed much more than they have been so far. Here's hoping.
