Five For Free #75

The Memories - Softly

Portland throws up another gem of an indie band in the excellent lo-fi quartet The Memories. They've recently released their debut album on the reliable Underwater Peoples label and you can pick up a typically ramshackle cut from it, 'Softly', from the link below. It's brilliantly fragile and seems as though it could all fall apart at any given moment.

Literature - Criminal Kids

As always, close on Portland's heals in the world of alternative guitar bands is Austin, and from the Texan city come powerpop band Literature who take C86 and mix it with alt-rock, throwing forth the result at 100mph. Their album 'Arab Spring' has just been released on vinyl and name-your-price download. Grab 'Criminal Kids' below to check out their sound.

Suckers - Turn On The Sunshine

While we're doing the rounds of American music hotspots we should check in with Brooklyn and Suckers who last week released their second full-length, 'Candy Salad'. Included is more of their trademark skewed, summery pop. Free track 'Turn On The Sunshine' sounds like Super Furry Animals embracing pure pop melodies suited to tropical climes.

Michael J. Epstein Memorial Library - Faith In Free Part 1

The lengthily monikered Michael J. Epstein Memorial Library are a large collective lead by scientist and musician Michael Epstein whose biography reads like that of a man with WAY too many projects on the go to be able to manage at once. 'Faith In Free Part 1' is superb experimental baroque indiepop taken from their EP 'Faith In Free' which is out in June.

Deadhorse - No Particular Night Or Morning

Also keeping things experimental are Pennsylvania's Deadhorse who formed in 2009 and already have a clutch of releases to their name. 'We Can Create Our Own World' was originally competed eighteen months ago and word is gradually spreading as more people pick up on their gently epic, swelling brand of post-rock. Have a listen to the glorious, slow burning 'No Particular Night Or Morning'.
