Out This Week - 9th April 2012

M Ward - Primitive Girl

Portland singer-songwriter M Ward takes a break from She & Him for another solo album. 'A Wasteland Companion' will be the eighth under his own name and single 'Primitive Girl' is Ward at his very finest. A catchy piece of powerpop with a tune that sounds a bit like another song that we can't quite put our finger on. Stream it below and see if you can figure it out!

Zambri - ICBYS

Sisters Cristi Jo and Jessica Zambri hail from the current home of many experimental sounds, New York, and this week they release their debut album 'House Of Baasa'. Free track 'ICBYS' mixes choppy tribal beats with warped synths and twisted electro while maintaining a heavy pop edge. One to file alongside Santigold and Sleigh Bells, let's hope they have the same success.

Sleepy Sun - Stivey Pond

Following up an album as critically acclaimed as 2010's 'Fever' was never going to be an easy task and the reviews for new record 'Spine Hits' have been somewhat mixed so far. This seems odd given that, from what we've heard, Sleepy Sun have included plenty of top quality psychedelic rock tracks on it. It gets a thumbs up from us, check out 'Stivey Pond'.

Mr Little Jeans - Runaway

It's been two years since we started banging on about Norwegian pop princess-in-waiting Mr Little Jeans, and now, after a long time of hearing very little at all, it's a pleasure to announce that her debut album is set to be released later in the year and that 'Runaway', her first proper single is out this week. And a very fine slice of streamlined pop it is too!

OBLIGATORY RECORD OF THE WEEK

Simon Love's Cock & Balls - Motherfuckers

Following the split of indiepop stars The Loves, main man Simon has embarked on two new projects: Knickers and the delightfully named Simon Love's Cock & Balls. Here he talks us through sublime new song 'Motherfuckers'.

"This is a rerecording of a song that was due to be on Knickers' first release but ended up being The Loves last release that was rush-recorded in four hours so it could be released in December 2010. This version is a bit more what I wanted. 'Stately' I believe the word is. Written about every hardcore, hate-filled Christian I've ever met. It's available to download FREE along with 'It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time' (a song that encapsulates a lifetime's worth of impotent rage into four and a bit minutes) here. I'm not sure how long for though. So do it now."
